After that I turned down all the invitations for the river parties for the rest of the four years of college. While all my friends would go and celebrate the end of finals or some holiday at the river, I would find some excuse to work or just stay home and study. If you really hate science, you can go ahead and skip over this part… and just know that I am a bit of a science geek, I have done a lot of research, and I have got you covered…

And while everything in the Blast Belly Fat Program is grounded in real science and research, and a big chunk of what I teach is based on the biologically functional difference of the lipids that are in belly fat vs. the fat stored in other parts of the body…

The main thing I’ve learned is that “science” really is the LEAST important part of it.

Most women KNOW what they should and shouldn’t eat.  And they KNOW they should probably exercise more… it’s actually DOING it and STICKING with it that seems to be the problem.

In other words… it’s not about having the information, it’s about finding the MOTIVATION and the INSPIRATION to do it.

That’s where the power is, that’s what changed everything for me… and that’s why I focus on the spirit when I teach you about these things.

Sure, I think the science is important, and I study it relentlessly…  But it’s not where the MAGIC (or the results) happen.

What’s more…  the scientists change their minds every year about what is supposed to be healthy and what is supposed to help us lose weight.  And what’s so funny about my scientist friends is that every time they come up with a new “supposed to” they think THIS time it’s REALLY the right thing!

Remember When?…

  • it was all about cutting out fats and the most successful diet in the world was the Duke Rice Diet where patients ate virtually NO PROTEIN and lots of simple carbohydrates like rice?
  • Remember when… to be healthy you had to eat from the four food groups?
  • Remember when… they said, “the 4 food groups are making Americans fat!  It should really be the FOOD PYRAMID!” with lots of whole grains and only very little protein at the top of the pyramid?
  • Remember when… they said, “Grains?!  They’re carbs!… and all carbs must go!  The food pyramid is upside down!  You can eat as much protein and fat as you can stuff into your mouth, but NO carbs!” and people went around eating bacon cheese burgers without the bun and thought they were eating health food?
  • Remember when… they said that  it wasn’t fat that was the problem… it was only “saturated” fats and we all threw out the butter and started eating margarine… only to have them tell us a few years later that margarine had “trans-fats” which were even WORSE?
  • Remember Ephedra?  I’ll admit it… I tried it, it was supposed to be good for you!  It had healthy sounding names like “Metabolife” and I thought, “Oh, okay i’ll burn off fat and stay skinny!” … but what they didn’t tell you is that it was just a hidden form or speed!

    Everybody was all cracked out and jittery, and when you crashed… you crashed HARD.  It was the hottest thing for years … but where is it now?

Have you ever stopped to think, “What the heck is going on with these scientists anyway?”

Well, there are three things going on:

1.  The Body Turns Out To Be WAY More Complex Than You Probably Learned In High School… Or Even Medical School…

While it would be nice if we could neatly say that it’s just a matter of expending more calories than you eat and you’ll lose weight, and that sure does SOUND practical… it’s wrong. And no matter how many experiments and tests we do, the vast majority of systems in the body remain completely MYSTERIOUS to us.

Many diets are based on theories that sound good on paper, but in the real world, the body does something unexpected.

Here’s a quick example…

A few years ago everyone was talking about taking “fat burner” pills with an amino acid called “L-Carnitine” in them, and all the companies selling these pills made a LOT of money (yes, yes, I bought them too).

The science looked good.  L-Carnitine is used in the body in a molecular reaction inside of the mitochondria of the cells to burn fat into energy.  So more L-carnitine, then, should mean more fat burning, right?

Well, yes, on paper.  But, unfortunately, after studies were finally done, it turned out that dieters on placebos did exactly as well dieters on the L-carnitine.

And that seems to be the way it goes with almost EVERY new theory.  What works on paper rarely seems to work in the real world.  The body is complex and it has millions of ways to adjust so that it doesn’t have to give up its fat.

2.  You Can’t Do Experiments On People

I guess this ought to be obvious, but you can’t put people in cages and monitor exactly what they do and eat.

Studies on humans, unfortunately, rely on humans doing what they SAY they will do and then not cheating and  hiding the fact that they’ve been cheating when they are asked later about their behavior.  No one wants to admit they’ve been cheating! Especially when you’re a part of a controlled, scientific study…

And yet all of these scientific studies rely on an accurate account for ALL of the test subjects’ behaviors and choices… and still living their life “in normal ways”.  In other words, doing the same things that other humans do, living in the same environments, and… well…

There are simply too many variables in these “studies” of large popluations of humans to ever get any REAL results.

To this day there are many scientists who will tell you that it has never been conclusively proven that saturated fats in meat are bad for us… that the results could just as easily be explained by other factors that go along with eating those fats or by specific proteins that are usually found in the same foods with those fats… or a thousand other things… and that it is possible that we will NEVER know the truth…

Unless we start putting people in cages.

And while that would be great for science… I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon.

3. Money

Unfortunately, big science takes big money.  And the folks that spend the money, mysteriously, seem to get exactly the scientific results they were hoping for.

Isn’t that a strange coincidence?

Of course there are many, many highly ethical researchers out there.  But MOST studies are done by big pharmaceutical companies and big food manufacturers who want to take a bunch of data and put together a story from the data that says, “my product is good for you, my product is safe, my product is going to make you healthy and lose weight.”

If ethical researchers say otherwise, they are all too frequently shouted down by the paid-for voices that so dramatically outnumber them.  (And I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before they come knocking on my door trying to shut ME up about all of this too)…

I’m sure you’ve heard that there is hard science that dairy products, which have a lot of calcium, are good for the bones and prevent osteoporosis (the disease that causes bones to weaken with age).

The only thing is… it’s just not true.  In fact, in East Asian countries where they eat NO dairy, they have much LOWER rates of osteoporosis than in the West.

Hmmm.

Unfortunately… that’s not an unusual  example of how big industry groups use science to deceive us.

She would create the diet for world-champion boxer, Mike Tyson’s, when he was in training.  And while this may seem like an extreme diet for a high-level professional athlete… I learned A LOT from working with her, and I had access to information that only elite athletes know about.

Then there was the food allergies and sensitivities.

I started to suspect that I had some kind of food allergies when a friend of mine lost 80 pounds from cutting wheat out of his diet without changing ANYTHING else. And so I went and researched everything I could about the signs, symptoms and causes of food sensitivities.
